REQUIRED PRAYERS AT ST. MARY'S SCHOOL

St. Mary's School required prayers for grades K-8

A prayer is a personal dialogue with God. These formal prayers guide us in our prayer life. There are many acceptable versions of these prayers. The following versions are those used, learned, and recited in class at St. Mary's School. This list shows the grade the prayers will first be learned. The list is then cumulative. This means that at the end of grade 4, students should know all the prayers listed for K, 1, 2, 3, and 4. The words for each prayer are included on this page; simply click on the name of the prayer desired or scroll down. Students are expected to recite these from memory.

Prayers:

The Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Glory Be to the Father
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Our Father
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace! The Lord is with you;
blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit
of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us
sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. And kindle in them the fire of your love. Amen.

Guardian Angel Prayer
Angel of God, my guardian dear;
To whom God's love entrusts me here,
Ever this day be at my side,
to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

Grace Before Meals
Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts which we are about
to receive from thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Grace After Meals
We give You thanks, Almighty God, for these and all Thy gifts which we
have received from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Morning Offering
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary;
I offer you all my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day.
For all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart.
In union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world.
In reparation for all my sins.
For the intentions of all our friends, and in particular for the
intention of our Holy Father for this month. Amen.

Act of Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee.
I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all
because they offend Thee, my God, who are all-good and
deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help of thy grace,
to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin. Amen.

Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord.
He was conceived of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day He rose again.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord,
Hosanna in the highest.

Hail Holy Queen
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope,
to you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve;
to you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears;
turn, then, most gracious Advocate, your eyes of mercy towards us,
and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Prayer to St. Michael
St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O prince of Heavenly hosts,
by the power of God, thrust into Hell Satan and the other evil spirits who
prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection,
implored your help or sought your intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;
to you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions,
but in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

The Angelus (This Marian prayer is not to be used during the Easter Season)
The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.
response: And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
(say Hail Mary)
Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
response: May it be done according to your word.
(say Hail Mary)
And the Word was made flesh.
response: And dwelt among us.
(say Hail Mary)
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
response: That we may be made worthy of the promise of Christ.
Let us pray: O Lord, it was through the message of an angel that we learned of the incarnation of Christ, your Son. Pour your grace into our hearts, and by His Passion and Cross bring us to the glory of His Resurrection. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
